Our annual, much loved Wassail returns!
Wassailing is a Twelfth Night tradition with pagan roots and has been practised in Britain for centuries. The purpose is to encourage the spirits into ensuring a good harvest the following season. It takes place in the weeks after Christmas and involves visiting an orchard for singing, dancing, drinking and general merrymaking.
In our traditional wassail, revellers (all of us) will head to the orchard behind the garden to visit the fruit trees, sing songs and make a hullabaloo (yep, that’s a real thing) by banging pots and pans .
Expect apple juice and mulled cider, singing, dancing to scare the evil spirits, and tying toast on trees to usher in the good ones.
